Karen Jonas is dedicated
to providing complementary/alternative health care information to the
general public.
Three out of four Canadians spent a total of 3.8 billion dollars to try
some form of complementary or alternative medicine in 1998. It is
obvious that Canadians are interested in natural health care but many lack
the tools to evaluate the hundreds of therapies, medicines and health care
providers that are vying for their attention and cash.
These seminars exist to help the average consumer make the best use of
their time and money to find safe, gentle healing therapies that will
allow them to maintain or improve their health. This knowledge will
in turn reduce the amount of employee sick leave, short and long-term
disability, and recovery time from health crises. Knowledge also
allows individuals to incorporate natural therapies into their health
regimen and remain healthy, productive contributors on the job and in our
society.

Natural Health Options
An overview of
major natural therapies – Western Herbalism (Naturopathy), Ayurvedic
Medicine, Chinese Medicine and Homeopathy. The pros and cons of each
therapy are discussed along with their philosophy, assessment methods and
medicine. Therapies are compared and contrasted with Western medicine
and with each other to help the individual determine which therapy will
best ‘fit’ their expectations and health requirements. Provides
models for evaluating the success of a therapy and the competence of the
practitioner. Reliable authors, websites, magazines and organizations
are also covered. A general overview of other ‘external’ therapies
(e.g. Acupuncture, Shiatsu, Reiki, Cranio-Sacral Therapy) is also included.
Dealing with Stress
Naturally
Lifestyle, diet,
exercise and natural anti-depressants are discussed. Science has
verified the effectiveness of St. John’s Wort
but there are many other ‘natural’ alternatives to
Prozac. Conventional drug, diet and natural treatment interactions and
contra-indications are also covered.
7 Habits of Healthy
People
Physical, mental
and emotional factors work together to prolong life. Learn the
secrets of living well, healthy and happy by exploring choices in food,
environment, physical activity, sleep, stress management, mental exercise
and spiritual growth. The biggest secret of all is that small changes
can have a huge impact on our overall well-being .
Women’s Health Naturally
PMS, peri-menopause
and menopause cover all phases of a woman’s working life. Explore
natural therapies that have been scientifically proven to reduce the pain,
discomfort and sick days related to these life stages. Osteoporosis,
mammograms, hormone replacement therapy, heart disease and breast cancer
risk are discussed. Emphasis is placed on diet, exercise and natural
health choices that can easily be incorporated in a busy schedule.
Fighting Colds & Flu
Antibiotic overuse
is a growing problem. More and more bacteria are becoming resistant
to current antibiotics and few new antibiotics will be available in the
next 10 years. Discover preventative and immune building strategies
to reduce dependence on antibiotics and flu medication. Herbs, vitamins,
minerals and homeopathic remedies are profiled. The latest scientific
studies on cold and flu prevention now include Echinaccea, Zinc and
Oscillococcinum. Children’s colds and earaches are also
discussed. Knowing when to call the doctor is critical to balancing
‘natural’ treatment with the wise use of antibiotics.
Natural Pain Management
Arthritis,
osteoarthritis, back pain, migraines, chronic sinusitis, colitis, muscle
aches and non-specific joint pain contribute to a large number of employee
sick days every year. Natural alternatives that have fewer
side-effects than corticosteroids and NSAIDs can be used to reduce chronic
or acute pain. Massage, acupuncture, shiatsu, reiki, therapeutic
touch and herbal medicine are just some of the many natural pain management
therapies available.
Treating Sports Injuries
with Homeopathy
Boris Becker, Pat
Riley (basketball coach) and Paul O’Neil all use or have used homeopathy
for their training and rehabilitation regimens. Homeopathic remedies
work quickly to heal torn or inflamed tendons and ligaments. Muscle
strain, sprained ankles, broken bones, concussion, deep bruises and nerve
pain can be healed 30-50% faster with homeopathic
treatment. Self-treatment for first-aid situations is possible after
just a few hours of instruction.
Natural First Aid for
Frequent Flyers, Home, Cottage and Out-of-Country Vacations
Learn how to treat
stage-fright (before exams, public speaking or weddings), motion sickness,
fear of flying, food poisoning, diarrhea, bee stings, poison ivy, 1st and
2nd degree burns, blisters, nose bleeds, black eyes, concussion,
frost-bite, insomnia, children’s teething pain and colic. Adult and
children’s doses are covered.
Organic versus
non-Organic Food
One in two
Canadians will deal with cancer at some point in their life. Current
cancer treatment therapies all have one thing in common – an organic food
diet. The connection between genetically modified food, non-organic
and organic food is explored. Maximize your grocery dollar by
selectively purchasing organic foods that receive and absorb the most
lethal doses of chemical toxins. Scientific testing of organic foods
indicates that they have up to 10 times more nutrients than non-organic
foods. Use food wisely to reduce your dependence on expensive herbal,
mineral and vitamin supplements.
